Our design strategy is to use younger, smaller plants and more of them. Why do we take this unique approach?
We're not into amending clay soil; many prairie natives actually prefer "nasty" clay, having evolved with it. We work hard to match plants to the site and to each other while introducing you to plants that have significant wildlife value. We specialize in straight species natives (non hybrids) to ensure pollinator and insect success.
By mixing plants with varying root systems and leaf structure, our gardens amend soil, store atmospheric carbon, clean water, and increase rainfall penetration -- all while out-competing weeds over time and ensuring wildlife can complete their life cycles.
1) We will meet with you in your landscape to discuss your goals, vision, and requirements. The standard consulting rate applies of $75 per hour in Lincoln and $150 per hour for locations 20 or more miles from downtown Lincoln. This fee is refunded or provided gratis if you sign a design contract with us within 2 weeks.
2) Each design contract requires a nonrefundable 50% retainer. Once the retainer is received we will create the planting scheme over the next several weeks. Upon completion we will meet with you at your site to go over all files, address questions, and receive payment for the design balance due. Please note that any requested scheme changes at this point will be completed at a $75 per hour design rate. We will also present plant material, site management, and other estimates at your request. You may decide to immediately go ahead and sign the plant contract at which time a 50% nonrefundable deposit is required to initiate order of all plant material.
Some situations are better handled by designing on site with the plant material. If we feel this is the case we'll discuss that option with you. A design and plant estimate will be provided, and on the day of install we will lay out the plants in your beds as the installers (you or a contracted crew) follow behind.
3) We will deliver plant material at a time and place of agreement noted in the plant contract. If site management services such as install management were arranged, we will also work with you and / or your contractor's schedule as agreed upon in the plant contract.
We may also be able to install the plants for you on a site by site basis, and we can discuss that option with you at any point in the process above.
First Year Consults
As part of your initial investment and our commitment to your success, we’ll schedule 2 complimentary, 1 hour consults during your garden’s very important first year if you go ahead and install our design. We’ll walk the landscape with you to identify weeds and discuss watering or mulching, as well as other management practices like cutting down the garden in spring and thinning seedlings. Together, we’ll see your landscape through the rough adolescence and into its establishment phase over 3-4 years. This early TLC will result in significant payoffs as soon as the second year.
By their very nature gardens need attention. Our landscapes tend to need far less, but care is often required to ensure a continued return on your investment. In the years after your installation we will identify weeds, remove unwanted seedlings to maintain the design aesthetic, and tweak or re-imagine any elements that need updating. Contact us as your needs require, or set up an annual plan tailored to your garden. Management plan costs are dependent on frequency and scope.
Garden Plan Costs
Depending on the size, scope, and estimated time our fees vary. Generally, a smaller bed or planting area will start around $750. We also include a supplemental hourly fee for any requested changes after you receive the design portfolio.
We've worked with clients across the Midwest and East Coast. Fees are based on consulting time via video conferencing, email, phone, and materials you can provide to facilitate the design process. We can also travel to your site.
Included in Design Portfolio
garden layout detailing plant placement
to-scale plan (unless garden is designed on site)
plant guide & profiles
management & install guide
resource list for further reading & education
all documents delivered electronically
Other Costs to Consider
For a typical urban home landscape this will be roughly 3-5x your design fee and highly dependent on your specific site and goals. We're happy to procure the plants for you under separate contract, while sourcing plants as locally as possible.
Supervise Plant Installation
We will lay out the plants at install, ensuring artistic and ecological integrity of the design and making essential adjustments on site, as well as managing any install crew and addressing hiccups as they arise.
Any plant install contractor you hire will also add to your project budget.
If you hire someone to build a new sidewalk, retaining wall, fire pit, pergola, patio and / or rework the grade. Costs are dependent on scope and materials used.
We’ll work with your contractors to tailor the planting design with any new hardscapes, as well as coordinate the planting schedule for your convenience.
Our turnaround from initial consult to plan completion is generally 2-3 weeks.
If we order the plants for you expect an additional 2-12 weeks after estimate / contract approval and down payment. The time frame varies due to plant availability and project scope.
Plant installation date is dependent on your contractor's schedule and your agreements with them. If you're installing the garden yourself we'll work with your schedule to the best of our ability.
We donate 5% of all garden design fees to Nebraska environmental nonprofits who preserve, restore, and educate about the tallgrass prairie, including:
